appreciate: René Magritte

appreciate René MagritteThe name Magritte may not be as familiar as Picasso or Pollack, but the work is. Belgian artist René Magritte is well-known for thought-provoking paintings that titter between surrealism and realism. Some of his most famous works include “Son of Man” and “The Treachery of Image“, both pieces make the audience process and question what they are seeing, eventually catching on to the artist’s clever nature. My personal favorite painting of his is “The Lovers”, pictured above. It rivals “The Kiss” by Gustav Klimt in romanticism, but adds an extra layer of mystery with the subjects’ faces covered in cloth. Though painted in the 1920s, it still resonates today with the message of sharing a personal moment in a public space while trying to retain some privacy. What is your interpretation of this painting. More of Magritte’s paintings can be found here. Definitely worth a look. Just thought I might suggest…

My daughter and I were just talking about Magritte the other day. One of his more recognizable works, the one of the faceless man in the business suit and bowler hat, was featured in the recent remake of The Thomas Crown Affair (definitely worth watching). Magritte’s work is intriguing, and open to interpretation. I particularly love the one you’re showing here.

    • I know which one you’re talking about! It’s called “Son of God” I mentioned it with a hyperlink in the post above. I thought about using it here, but I think “The Lovers” is just beautiful
