Listen: Fare Thee Well (Dink’s Song)

Listen Fare Thee Well (Dink's Song)I’m not the biggest fan of folk music: I have some Bob Dylan, James Taylor, and Cat Stevens songs on my iPod, but that genre is in the minority when it comes to music I usually listen to. The overabundance of folk music is what made me apprehensive about seeing the Coen Brothers’ latest film, “Inside Llewyn Davis”, but once I saw the film, I had a new appreciation for not only the art of folk singer-songwriters, but for the film’s soundtrack. One song that stood out to me was “Fare Thee Well (Dink’s Song)“. It is a classic standard for folk music, this time being recorded by the film’s star, Oscar Isaac, the soundtrack version features Mumford and Sons’ lead singer Marcus Mumford. It is  a lovely simple song that sets the tone for the rest of the film. If you have the time, check out the movie and the soundtrack. Just thought I would suggest….

Nice to have your horizons widened. Film can do that nicely. I am assuming you are an American, because your examples of folk are not the same as I would choose. I know Dylan is touted as folk, but i never personally saw Cat Stevens as folk. It is interesting that we of British/Irish descent see the singers of old traditional songs as folk. I know Louis Armstrong said all music is folk music, but I recommend you visit YouTube and check out people such as Steeleye Span, Niamh Parsons, Planxty, Rapalje, Eliza Carthy and just follow your nose. I hope you enjoy it!
