appreciate: Fornasetti

appreciate FornasettiI had seen the portrait of this woman’s face everywhere, finding her image fascinating and creepy at the same time, but I never knew who the artist was until recently when I saw the imagery again on Instagram. Italian artist Piero Fornasetti was a jack of all trades in his field: he was a painter, a sculptor, interior designer, and engraver to name a few things. But the 1,000 plus items he designed which featured the face of operatic singer Lina Cavalieri will be what he is most known for. It is said that he saw her face in a magazine and from then on, just couldn’t stop. Talk about a muse, huh? (sidenote: how romantic would it have been if they got together in the end? Proof that life is not a romantic movie). His work still lives on in the form of his son and several of his products can be found in high and low end retail stores. More of Fornasetti’s work can be found here. Just thought I would suggest…

Amazing that an artist would be that fascinated with that particular face… She is beautiful and intriguing, but I tend to think that artists are always drawn to whatever they haven’t seen before. Still, if this is what he became known for, that’s better than artistic obscurity…

    Art is better when mysterious!

  1. […] Fornasetti: I always saw his work in the most random places. I finally discovered who the artist in question was and leapt at the chance to find out more about him. […]
