explore: The Door to Hell

explore The Door to HellI don’t spend much time picturing what the entrance of hell looks like, but I imagine that the Door to Hell comes pretty close. Located at a natural gas field in Derweze, Turkmenistan, the Door to Hell gets its name from the natural gas fire that has been burning since it was lit in  1971 by a group of Soviet scientists. The area was once used an oil field, but the ground beneath the drilling rig collapsed. Not wanting to spread poisonous gas around the area, the safest and cheapest way to prevent that from happening was to start a gas fire. They expected the gas would burn within a couple of days, but the underground natural gas deposits have not run out and the fire continues to burn to this today. If you can withstand the smell of burning sulfur, then the Door to Hell awaits. Just thought I would suggest…
