appreciate: Mark Rothko

mark rothkoI did some impulse buying today at the art store, Utrecht, picking up a couple of small canvases, watercolors, and acrylic paint, just because it was there an dI was feeling inspired. While looking to the internet for some inspiration on some painting techniques I could, I came across a painting I had seen before by Mark Rothko called “White Center”, pictured above on the left. Doing some research, I found out this abstract painting was purchased for $72 million dollars. I thought to myself, 3 blocks and a black line sold for that much?! I can do it too. But like all famous art, there’s more than meets the eye when it comes to Rothko paintings. “White Center” is the result of several layers of complementary colors being painted on a canvas. It looks like it could be easy to duplicate, but the actual result took time to create. That is something that we all need to remember in our daily lives and something I’ll definitely need this weekend when I start painting my “masterpiece”. More of Rothko’s work can be found here.

This is exactly right! Rothko is now one of my favorite artists his works are mastery of atmosphere and emotion but until I had seen one in person I viewed them with nothing but derision at the simplicity.
