Appreciate: Per Kirkeby

per kirkeby db-artmagcomI went to the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C. a while back and I came across an exhibition by famed Danish artist Per Kirkeby and was an instant fan of his work. His inspiration for his work comes from his interest in nature and geology, which he had a masters degree in. He was a member of eks-skool, which was an experimental art movement that sought to break down the barrier between teacher and student. It was here where he honed his craft of being a painter, sculptor, writer, and lithographer. Something I love about Kirkeby’s work is the use of color and the layering of different mediums. His paintings look like lithographs and vice versa, truly making hims a versatile abstract artist. More of his works can be found here.
