Explore: Luray Caverns, Virginia
Since moving to the Washington, D.C. area, I have discovered little hidden gems like Luray Caverns. Two hours away from the nation’s capital, the cave was discovered almost 200 years ago. It is filled with several limestone and stalagmite columns that formed naturally over time and mirrored pools, some of which are illuminated. A popular site in the cave are Great Stalacpipe Organ, which is a lithophone made from stalactites of different sizes that produce a sound similar to a xylophone. Also, tourists like to visit the Wishing Well, which is a 6 foot deep pool where people toss coins and even dollar bills into. Once a year, the money is removed and donated to different charities and organizations. Definitely worth the drive if you’re in the area.
