Appreciate: Martin Schoeller
As an artist in any medium, it is important to have a certain style that distinguishes you from other artist. People can look at an Andy Warhol or Toulouse-Lautrec and immediately know the work belongs to one of them. For New York photographer Martin Schoeller, he is known for his close up portraits of a variety of people, ranging from female bodybuilders to celebrities. He is also know for his editorial work in magazines like The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, and Vogue. He actually used to work for Annie Leibovitz, and you can see hints of influence in the way the subject poses, but the photography and concepts are all him. The best part about Schoeller’s editorial work is the situations he puts his subjects in. They are sometimes so bizarre, yet visually striking.
