Appreciate: Bernard Lorjou’s “Vase de Fleurs” series

Even though Vincent van Gogh, Henri Matisse, and Edvard Munch are the more well-known expressionists, French artist Bernard Lorjou contributed a lot to the 20th century art world. At the age of 13, the self-taught artist left home and slept in train stations until he found a job as a silk designer and became successful. He used his salary to fund his art, that included still life like the one above and socio-political themes. No matter what his inspiration or subject, something that never change was his use of vibrant, lively, and rich colors, which is displayed heavily in his multiple vase de fleurs paintings. Different settings, backgrounds, and flower arrangements are featured in each painting, but spirit and passion behind each is the same. Any of Lorjou’s works from this series would make an excellent addition to liven up a home.
